Telecollaborative projects are built around three formats:
Interpersonal Exchange These focus on communication between students and peers, experts or other individuals and groups throughout the world. They include such activities as:

- Global classrooms
- Electronic appearances
- Question-and-answer activities
Information Collection and Analysis These focus on collecting information locally, then comparing, contrasting, and/or combining the data to analyze it and understand it. They include such activities as:
- Information exchanges
- Pooled data analysis
- Database creation
- Electronic publishing
- Telefieldtrips
Problem-Solving These focus on solving different kinds of problems in different ways. They include such activities as:
- Parallel problem solving
- Social action
- Information searches
- Teleconferencing
- Simulations
