An Example

As an example of how mail lists work, we show a message that is regularly sent with the Flash Mail service of the magazine Computer World. This message describes a series of actions that the recipient can take in order to cancel, modify, or send comments about this service. In each case the action is initiated by sending an email message with a particular string in the subject line.

* To cancel this weekly update, send us
a reply with the word "unsubscribe" in
the subject line. Please leave the
body of the message blank (it usually
won't be read).

* To change your E-mail address, send
us a reply with the word "change-addr"
in the subject line. In the body of
the message include your old and new
E-mail addresses, on separate lines, in
the following format:

OLD: [email protected]
NEW: [email protected]

* If you have comments or complaints
about this service, send us a reply
with the word "Comments" (capitalized
as shown) in the subject line.

* If you have questions about the
content described in this E-mail
message, send us a reply with the word
"Questions" (capitalized as shown) in
the subject line.

If you subscribe to mail lists, you may find it useful to keep a directory of such messages so that you can quickly locate the messages needed to control the mail lists to which you subscribe.
