Running Giftrans

If you simply double click the icon for the giftrans program, an MSDOS window will open and the program will run in the window. Briefly. But right after the program begins, the MSDOS window closes. So how do you get giftrans to work? The answer turns out to be simple: you have to open the MSDOS window manually before you try to run the giftrans program.

A quick way to open the MSDOS command window is to click the Start button on your Windows computer's task bar and select Run at the bottom of the Start menu. Then a dialogue window titled "Run" should appear. In the "Open" field of this window type "cmd" (of course without the quotes; this can be in lowercase, uppercase, or any combination of the two).

Once the MSDOS command window is open, move if necessary to the drive on which you've saved the downloaded giftrans program. (This may be necessary if you saved the downloaded program on a disk of your computer other than the one on which your Windows operating system files are located.) For example, if the operating system files are on drive C but you downloaded giftrans to the D drive, type "D:" (note the colon after the drive letter) to move to the D drive. (The DOS command window will have opened in this case with you located on the C drive.) Now use the DOS cd command to move to the folder on drive D where the downloaded giftrans file is located. (Note that "cd" stands for "Change Directory", which means "move to the folder" named.) For example, if you saved giftrans in a folder named "gt" on drive D, you'd now issue the command "cd gt".

Once you've moved to the folder/directory where the giftrans program file is located, just type the program's name to run it; i.e., just type:

giftrans
This will run the executable file giftrans.exe and will display a brief set of help messages that show the available options for the program and how to use them.
