Besides Microsoft's NetMeeting there are other videoconferencing programs available. Some of these are

Ivisit - developed by the same people who developed CU-SeeMe, this program can run audio and video over phone lines.

Iris Phone - allows you transmit and receive audio and still pictures (the number of frames per second depends on your connection speed)

ICUII - has an interface similar to CU-SeeMe.

CU-SeeMe now exists as commercial software, rather than as freeware. You can see the kind of impact its use has had on videoconferencing on the web by visiting some of the sites that have been set up for CU-SeeMe users. But keep in mind that some of these may not be age appropriate, so be sure to check the sites before attempting to demonstrate them to others.
